Vegan, Natural and Organic Cosmetic Products

Vegan, natural, and organic cosmetic items are gaining popularity worldwide. There is a wide array of vegan, organic, and natural cosmetics available in the market, covering various product categories. Numerous top beauty brands now provide these alternatives. This increased popularity of this type of product reflects a growing awareness among consumers about the impact of their choices on both personal health and the environment.

Vegan cosmetic products

For a product to be considered vegan there are a few points that it must meet, namely:

  • The product must not contain ingredients or by-products of animal origin;

  • The manufacturing process must not involve the use of ingredients or by-products derived from animals;

  • The product must not contain ingredients or raw materials that have been tested on animals;

  • No animal testing may be carried out on the cosmetic product.

Therefore, these products are often made with plant-based ingredients, minerals, and synthetic alternatives instead of animal-derived substances.

Vegan cosmetics are frequently regarded as more environmentally friendly compared to those containing animal-derived ingredients. Typically, plant-based ingredients tend to have a lower environmental footprint.

Natural and Organic cosmetic products

For Natural and Organic cosmetic products, it was developed, by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), a guideline specific to the cosmetic sector, ISO 16128. This guideline provides definitions for terms such as "natural," "natural origin," "organic," and "organic origin; also describes how to calculate the natural and organic ingredient content in cosmetic products and describes the method for determining the percentage of natural and organic ingredients based on their origin and processing. Its goal is to establish a harmonized method for determining the natural and organic ingredient content, aiding consumers in making informed decisions and promoting transparency within the industry.

For this assessment, the manufacturers of the raw materials must provide information related to the composition, origin and processing of the ingredients.
