Some examples are:
- Coffee stains
- Hulls and fruit pulp
- Used oils
- Flower petals
- Waste from beer and wine production
- Upcycled algae
- Residues from nut processing
The European Union Waste Framework Directive (EU) provides fundamental definitions and criteria when a material ceases to be a waste and becomes a product or raw material. Cosmetic ingredients derived from upcycled materials shall comply with these standards, taking into account their inclusion in annexes of ingredients, safety requirements and microbiological and production impacts, in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice (BPF).
It is imperative not to assume that an ingredient is inherently sustainable because it was upcycled. To ensure that there are no concerns or issues related to the welfare of workers, it is crucial to have a comprehensive knowledge of the entire supply chain.
Claims relating to the environmental benefits of cosmetic products, including the origin of ingredients, shall comply with the same strict standards as other claims on cosmetics in accordance with Article 20 of the EU Cosmetic Regulation, the Common Criteria of the Cosmetics Claims Regulation and the EU Disloyal Commercial Practices Directive. These claims should be true and substantiated with solid evidence, considering the perspective of the well-informed common consumer.
The essential information to be communicated shall include:
- The origin of the recycled component
- the residues from which the ingredient has been separated.
- If it has been processed and has been chemically altered since it was considered a residue
- Whether natural variations of colour or odor should be expected in the final product
- Explain what an upcycling ingredient is
As the cosmetic industry evolves, the scientific integration of upcycled ingredients is proof of commitment to sustainability. Through meticulous analysis and validation, these innovations not only meet cosmetic standards, but also contribute substantially to the broader narrative of a scientifically sound and environmentally conscious cosmetic science. The path towards sustainable beauty is now interconnected with a scientific exploration of various ingredients with various resources, paving the way for a greener and more responsible future in cosmetic formulations.
