In view of the increasing rates of overweight and obesity in most EU Member States (EU) and the increase in non-communicable diseases with risks associated with the diet, the importance and interest in food labelling has been increasing. The free movement of safe and healthy food is an essential aspect and contributes significantly to the health and well-being of its consumers. In order to achieve a high level of health protection, labelling allows consumers to provide information so that they can make healthier food choices, tailored to their needs, allowing them to make conscious food decisions. On this basis, there is also an incentive for food business operators to reformulate their products in order to offer healthier options.
Labelling of foodstuffs in the European Union:
Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 on the provision of information to consumers on foodstuffs entered into force in December 2014. This Regulation lays down common definitions, principles, requirements and procedures in order to create a clear framework and a common basis for EU and national food information measures. It also encouraged the clearer and more harmonised presentation of all the requirements to be met by a label in order to circulate correctly, legally and provide essential information to the consumer, such as:
– Ingredients composing the product;
– List of allergens;
– nutrition information;
– the validity of the products;
– country of origin or place of provenance;
– net quantity;
– Method of manufacture or production;
- Etc.
For whom:
It applies to food business operators at all stages of the food chain, where their activities involve the provision of food information to the consumer, and also applies to all foodstuffs intended for the final consumer. The Regulation also clarifies the responsibilities of food business operators for food information.
